it has been a while.

and i have a stack of postcards still waiting to be photographed.
though, i have failed to draw one for every day that has gone by since i last posted.

so.
in one way, my ambitious project failed.
and i regret it, but this semester has truly been the hardest one yet.
{since i last posted, i have been offered a job at an animation studio, i have had to raise tons and tons of money to go to italy in january, and i have been trying to keep my room clean- a project in itself }
however, i know that when i have more time i will pick it back up.
guaranteed.
i have taken to taking pictures with a disposable camera of things i will draw when i have a resting moment. so there are definitely more postcards to come.

please forgive me, and don't look down on me, my readers.
i miss my postcard drawing dearly.

soon.

The things i have learned

in such a short time.

i have been noticing so many tiny details- things that will never be seen again, things that i have walked past everyday, things that people do or say often. i find myself wanting to draw a postcard for every instance, but i would have run through my postcard stash by now! it is a good thing, though. it makes me happy that my eyes seem to be working better now than they ever have- and all because i started drawing on postcards. it makes me happy too that i have found myself more often than not in a looking mood, not so focused on my day or the stress of college life that i miss the small details.

this project has already changed me.
in just a few short months i have become a better observer of things that truly do deserve attention. it goes deeper than mere eyesight, though; something about katie keeley winters has changed. maybe not perceptible to other people, but still there.
i suppose it's kind of one of those things you can't really put into words...

{p.s. i promise those new postcards will be up soon. sadly, the internet at the Hole is not very fast and will not let me upload pictures, so i have to find time outside the home...}

Saturday 4th september

Today i saw: a balloon enjoying its weekend.
out on a holiday, and running away from any birds who might get the wrong idea that rubber is nice to eat.

{sent to my friend Beth, who also happens to be my boss, who also happens to be on the bird's side}

x

Friday 3rd september

Today i saw: working internet!
can i just say that it sucks to be a college student without internet? waking up at 5:00am to go to campus to do homework is not fun, my friends.
but now, thanks to marnie's amazing parents, the hole has internet.

{sent to mr. and mrs. younger}

x

Thursday 2nd september

{sent to my beautiful sister anna}

x

Sunday 29th august

Today i saw: mila peeking down her straw to see her water.
me: watching my water go back down my straw, "mila can you see your water through your straw?"
4 year old mila: "no, i don't think so...my eye is too big! ... but if i was a snail, i could just crawl down in there..."

this is the same day mila assigned all my sisters to the disney princess they looked most like.
i was mulan.

{sent to my good friend mila and her family}

x

Saturday 28th august

Today i saw: a hummingbird spectacular!
beautiful, really.

{sent to crystal and lee for a happy anniversary card}

x

Friday 27th august

Today i saw: poor Vincent being towed away.
background information: mar's car is called vincent because it only has one side view mirror- it is missing it's righty. vincent van gogh was also missing his righty.

story: we may or may not have missed the sign about there being a speed bump and if we did, it was not our fault that we were going over 15 mph and that the bottom scraped off and vincent's blood left a trail from the speed bump to the curb.
however, the tow truck lady was a hoot. she sat and criticized women tow truck drivers who looked all greasy and like men, however, we didn't know she was a she until she was a foot away from us....

the end.

{sent to mar in remembrance of that tragic, hilarious day}

x

Thursday 26th august

there is nothing comparable to clean wheels and bats, fresh clay, and loren baker on an august day. truly.

{sent to my brilliant ceramics friend, sam leaden}

x

Tuesday 24th august

Today i saw: a gigantic cow on the back of a truck on the freeway.
it was a got milk cow, to be exact.

x

i pretended we were on a vacation far away, and i never wanted to go back home.

{sent to danielle, my newly engaged friend}

x

Today i saw: my new home on Gagely street!
affectionately called "the hole".

{sent to alyssa, who squatted here for us during the summer- what a pal.}

Today i saw: El Torascos.
you know? from Hoku's burrito song?

if you want to see the music video that changed my life in 4th grade and now has inspired this postcard, follow this:

{p.s. i apologize for the sideways nature of this post.
for some odd reason, no matter how many times i saved this picture right side up it, it always managed to flip itself back over once it was put on here.}

Thursday 19th august

Today i saw: a very organized cabinet.
that i cleaned myself!
my boss gave me a mess of a storage cabinet to put in order in my spare time at work. he thought i would never finish it, but here it is in all it's glory!

{sent to luke, my boss}

Today i saw: a corner of my lawn filled with dandelions.
i love those things.

{sent to tyler's aunt and uncle}

x

Sunday 15th august

Today i saw: my father push the same floppy dollar bill into the machine for a good five minutes- it was a losing, but hilarious, battle...
he was absolutely determined to only use THAT dollar bill. finally the cashier lady came over and had to convince him that it was not going to work and she put a new dollar bill in the machine. i don't think that was the highlight of her day.

{will be sent to one of my sisters i think.}

school and tidal waves.

i am in high over my head this semester, my friends.
art major is a full time occupation i am coming to learn.
and it has a rather annoying side-affect: it makes me only want to do fun work. all the time. drawing and doodling. browsing anthropologie (bad bad bad for my not-coveting record, good for my soul). finding amazing artists' blogs. sitting in the ceramics studio all day at the wheel. making these postcards.
when, in fact i should be writing genesis notes and reading job and plato.

that is the thick of it.
tidal waves of work.

Saturday 14th august

Today i saw: the most terrific lady- "advanced in years" but with great taste in fashion.
she had on a dusty pink, mostly shapeless but very lacy dress, grey shorts underneath, ivory thick tights, black mary janes, a large carpet bag over her shoulder, and a huge hat with flowers to top it all off.
she reminded me of a short, quirky mary poppins.

{sent to marielle}

x

Friday the 13th

Today i saw: a warm oven containing a delicious peach cobbler.
while my parents were gone for the week, i used all of my mother's flour, eggs, and butter and made a desert every night. peach cobbler finished the week off, and it was splendid if i do say so myself.

{sent to tyler's grandparents, who made peach cobbler with me the last time for fourth of july}

x

Friday, August 13, 2010

Thursday 12th august

Today i saw: huntington beach with its freezing cold water and warm cozy sand.
{and a lifeguard who was on the phone the entire time, hooting and hollering and joking up a storm. good watchman, that one}

{sent to my sister julia}

x

Wednesday 11th august

Today i saw: the most beautiful illustrations in a "wizard of oz" book.
found in my favorite theater turned bookstore in uptown whittier.
if i had money, i would have bought it, i think.

{sent to amber}

x

Tuesday 10th august

Today i saw: pie for breakfast.
our experiment- which was originally supposed to be ravioli dough, but with a few ingredients added and some berries in the middle, turned out to be a pie.
and a yummy one at that, my friends.

{sent to christine}

x

Monday 9th august

Today i saw: Marnie in california!
finally.

{sent to tay-tay vincent}

x

Sunday 8th august

Today i saw: my beautiful new dress.
it's a beige {maybe nudeish?} color, and it reminds me of peter pan for some reason.
i am going to wear it to daniel and allison's wedding!

{sent to megan loumagne)

x

Saturday 7th august

Today i saw: empty teepees at the end of camp idrafoje.
amen and amen.

{sent to kim vincent}

x

Friday 6th august

Today i saw: many people pie'd in the face.
at the end of camp, we put on a carnival for the kids. i promised myself last year that i would not be in charge of the pie in the face booth, but i think i forgot.
i now promise myself for the second time- never shall i work that booth again.
i smell like rotten milk for days after because somehow i'm the one who gets a pie to the face, even though i'm the worker.

{sent to rigo}

x

Thursday 5th august

Today i saw: Daisy paying full attention to the nighttime lesson.

she had never been to church, and she sat by herself most of camp. i don't think there was anyone who needed to hear david's story of God's peace more than her. she listened and took notes only after she peeked over and saw me- writing big enough for her to see- taking notes on the important parts. after that, she filled up her notebook with every detail of his story ending with the sentence, "peace comes through Jesus Christ".
i cried a little.
i am not sure if she understood everything that week, but i think she knows now that heaven is not only a transition between one life and another, but it is a permanent place where she could be with her God- the same God who gave david newkirk unspeakable peace, and the same God who loves her and is pursuing her relentlessly.

{sent to david newkirk}

x

Wednesday 4th august

Today i saw: my interpretation of the family tree- (drawn over the devotional part in my booklet)
wednesday morning we learned about abiding; staying connected to the true vine and bearing fruit. the family tree, found in the "trees of mystery" tourist trap, began as one tree that was so healthy, it grew new trees off of its own branches. crazy, and beautiful.

{sent to pastor scott}

x

Tuesday 3rd august

Today i saw: the largest, most intricate spiderweb ever.
i was scared for the spider because i was afraid his beautiful work would be destroyed by all the crazy kids at camp. but when someone ran through it, he just spent the night spinning it to face the other way so as to allow the kids to run right by it. witty spider.

{sent to kyleen hughes.}

x

Monday 2nd august

Today i saw: the beginning of camp.
56 kids, and five days in teepees turned out to be really good.

{sent to mandy}

x

Sunday 1st august

Today i saw: our barbeque cooking the best hamburgers known to man.
{truly truly}

sent to my grandpa.

x

Saturday 31st july

Today i saw: my sewing machine hard at work.
poor little guy is going to have a short life, i predict.

{i made my friend a summer gift.}

{postcard sent to tyler's aunt, who loves to sew}

x

Sunday, August 8, 2010

well kids, life... is full of disappointments.

{name the movie}

i have been away at camp, and again have not had the time and energy needed to put the new ones up.
forgive me.
they are coming soon!

and they shall be good.

x

Saturday, July 31, 2010

p.s.

it is definitely time for a new micron.

Friday 30th july

Today i saw: a happy old man driving his goat around in the back of his truck.
it was funny because it was in the same place dogs are usually tied, but when we got closer, sure enough, it was a fat daddy goat- happy as could be.

{sent to blake wigglesworth}

x

Thursday 29th july

Today i saw: Lofty Lou's- the most scrumptious yarn store.
i swear they make enough money to feed a small army off of what we come and buy every time we are up, but the yarn there simply cannot be beat.
and the old ladies who work there are just too kind {and talkative!}. i could make my bed in the back, and live there the rest of my life.

{i sent this one to my dearly loved mom, who usually ends up spotting my expensive 100% wool purchases...}

x

Wednesday 28th july

Tonight i saw: the most spectacular moonrise.
too far beyond words.

{sent to tyler, who will forever be my star watcher companion}

x

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Tuesday 27th july

Today i saw: Sweetie Pies.
{mmmmm.}
my most favorite restaurant in placerville.
it's a rule that, when we are up north with nana and papa, there must be one morning where we visit Sweetie Pies and get olallieberry pie for breakfast.
it is officially the kids' favorite morning, hands down.

{sent to my nana}

x

Monday 26th july

Today i saw: rows and rows of citrus trees while driving up north.
that's about all you see for a while.
and i look forward to it every time.

while i am up north for the week, i am sending some of my postcards to tyler.
he was not able to adventure with me this time, so i am sending him my findings.

x

Sunday 25th july

Today i saw: a bridge covered in the prettiest trees and plants.
it, in fact, looked like a park above the freeway and i wanted really badly to stop and walk in it.
someday, i think i will try and find it again.

{sent to my cousin andrew, who said that i need to make all my postcards look like this, "none of the little one-cookie-sandwich-with-a-few-lines business" }

x

Saturday 24th july

Today i saw: jr. highers mercilessly thrown off the tube at camp.
{quite hilarious}

{sent to Benton Treerise}

x

Friday 23rd july

Today i saw: {or rather found} the best place to set up a tent.
at junior high camp the boys stay to one side of the campsite and girls stay to the other, and leaders are free to go wherever.
so we found the perfect creekside place where we could hear the water at night and listen to all the crickets and frogs.

this one is being sent to my dear friend Rebecca Young, who was with me on this particular adventure.

x

Thursday 22nd july

Today i saw: a happy transformer man.
{actually just a transformer with painted on eyes. and the credit for finding this one goes to my dad, who found it years ago, but i saw it driving and thought it deserved to be on a postcard}

{sent to my daddy}

x

Wednesday 21st july

Today i saw: my first delicious cookie sandwich from the 'world famous' Cookie Mill.

i am glad there are ice cream sandwiches in this world.
{sent to brian hinds}

x

Monday, July 26, 2010

broken cameras and vacations.

but i have been keeping up.
i will post them when i get home, or when the camera decides to work again.

until then, something to think about
from the BFG,

'Is it ever occurring to you that a human bean who is fifty is spending about twenty years sleeping fast?'
'I must admit that never occurred to me, ' said Sophie.
'You should allow it to occur to you,' the BFG said. 'Imagine it please. This human bean who says he is fifty has been fast asleep for twenty years and is not even knowing where he is! Not even doing anything! Not even thinking!'
'It's a funny thought,' said Sophie.

Tuesday 20th july

Today i saw: stacks and stacks of books on a table in the library waiting to be checked out and taken to my house.

the library is one of my most favorite places.
even though it didn't have the books i was looking for, i came across Roald Dahl's "BFG", which is a good substitute.

"Once again that sad winsome look came into the BFG's eyes.
'Words," he said, "is oh such a twitch-tickling problem to me all my life. So you must simply try to be patient and stop squibbling. As i am telling you before, I know exactly what words i am wanting to say, but somehow or other they is always getting squiff-squiddled around.'
'That happens to everyone,' Sophie said.
'Not like it happens to me,' the BFG said. 'I is speaking the most terrible wigglish.'
'I think you speak beautifully,' Sophie said."

{sent to garnett ford, who will soon be reading non-stop with me}

x

Monday 19th july

Today i saw: inconspicuous toadstools drawn on a sidewalk...
sent to brenna pierson, my dear friend who is far away from home right now.

i walked right by them the first time, they were so small.
but they deserved attention, i think, even though they weren't asking to be noticed.

{p.s. apologies for tininess of the picture, i am inept when it comes to fiddling with photos on the computer. the way it comes out from the camera is the way it must go on, for now.}

x

Sunday 18th july

Today i saw: a table covered in butcher paper-
i played tic-tac-toe while waiting for my bagel.

it reminded me of playing the games on the kid's coloring menu at Polly's Pies with my grandma when i was little. i think that if i ever were to open my own little cafe, i would most definitely cover the tables in butcher paper and pass out crayons.

{by the way, i sent this one to my grandma}

x

Saturday, July 17, 2010

Saturday 17th july

Sent to marnie may in the beautiful Wisconsin, where one might see cyclists making the same fashion statement.

Today i saw: a bicycle man making a fashion statement in black stockings, powder blue shorts, and a green backpack. {like, glimmering, shiny, sheer, maybe women's stockings}
he was quite a looker.

x

Friday, July 16, 2010

p.s.

i have officially written on these four and they are ready to send out in the mail tomorrow to my papa, natalie hollearn, robynne peterson, and annie rose logie.

eep!

x

Friday 16th july

Thursday 15th july: today i saw the largest rainbow known to man. it was a very hot and humid sort of rainbow, but beautiful nonetheless.

Friday 16th july: today i saw tyler make a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich with mustard on a toasted cinnamon raisin bagel. i question his taste in food sometimes.

x
